Making onboard purchases has never been easier
In 2020, United launched a contactless payment platform that allows travelers to make onboard purchases using a stored card in their United app. More than a year and 2.1 million transactions later, here’s how much travelers are enjoying this feature:
• More than 22 million cards have been stored with us
• On the average flight with contactless payment options, 50 percent of passengers are ready with their credit card stored in the United app
• The return of snackboxes was a welcome change, with more than 550,000 snackboxes sold since May 2021
Now, there are even more ways to make onboard purchases. In addition to storing a credit card, customers can use United’s industry-leading partnership with PayPal by generating a QR code from their account in the PayPal app. And United Cardmembers can store their United Card to the app and use it for 25 percent back on food and beverages.
MileagePlus® members can also use miles to purchase snacks and beverages on board. After making sure their MileagePlus number is connected to their reservation, members can use miles to buy food and drinks simply by verifying their identity with the flight attendant.
As with the introduction of Money + Miles—the option to combine cash and MileagePlus miles to pay for flights—this change means that even smaller mile balances can be used to enhance the traveler’s experience.
“Miles give our members access to once-in-a-lifetime trips, events, and experiences,” says MileagePlus team member Nicole Massimino. “We’re thrilled that members can now use them for smaller everyday purchases that help make their travel experiences more seamless.”
