Each month we’ll be introducing you to a United Airlines frequent flyer, so you can get to know your fellow passengers. This month, it’s investor and basketball fan Peter Sasaki. He loves to sample the local street food on his travels and doesn’t fly without a pair of Nike Air Jordans. Let’s meet Peter…

What do you do for a living? Do you fly most for work or pleasure?

I’m a professional investor managing a multifamily office. I fly mostly for work but am fortunate to really enjoy my job.

How many countries have you visited as a frequent flyer?

I’ve been to 30-plus countries. I don’t have a favorite; I find them all fascinating. I enjoy being a repeat visitor, and I can’t wait for travel to normalize.

What is the next vacation you have planned?

Honolulu [above]. I try to visit once or twice a year. Being five to six time zones away from any major financial center allows for true relaxation.

What’s the most meaningful trip you’ve ever taken?

My first one. I was born in New Haven, Connecticut, while my father was serving as a U.S. Army surgeon with the 95th Evacuation Hospital in Da Nang, Vietnam. We didn’t meet until he was able to get leave to Honolulu. My very ambitious mother took me, at 6 months old, on an 11-hour United nonstop from NYC to HNL.

What’s your favorite United flight you’ve been on?

Last October, I commemorated the 50th anniversary of my first flight by traveling with my family from EWR to HNL for vacation. The United customer service representatives, gate agents, and inflight crew had a small celebration for us. My parents were very surprised!

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten on your travels?

Anything from the hawker centers in Singapore. I tend to seek out street food when I travel so I can have an authentic local experience.

Who is the most interesting person you’ve sat next to during your travels?

I’ve sat next to many well-known entertainers, athletes, and politicians, but I’m an instrument-rated private pilot, so sitting next to a commuting United pilot and talking aviation is always a good time.

What place is at the top of your bucket list?

Antarctica.

What do you like to wear when you fly?

I still remember having to fly in a business suit for work, so now I dress for comfort: Classic Air Jordans, Levi’s, Brooks Brothers button-down Oxford shirt, and my Hopkins School fleece vest by Vineyard Vines for day flights, or my Pomona College hoodie for overnight flights. I’m honored to serve as a trustee of both my high school and my college!

Must-have carry-on item?

Bose noise-canceling headphones.

Which famous person living or dead—would be your dream seatmate?

San Antonio Spurs basketball coach Gregg Popovich. Accomplished coach, manager, and educator. Even on a short flight, I could probably learn something!
